Two hands, two jobs
Reading a clock starts with knowing the hands have different jobs: the short hand points to the hour, the long hand points to the minutes. The trickiest idea at this level is half past — when the long hand points to 6, the hour hand sits halfway between two numbers, but the time still uses the earlier hour (3:30, never 4:30).
How to use it
Have students read the hour hand first (“which number did it just pass?”), then the minute hand. For half-hour times, count by fives to the 6 (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30) to connect the long hand to “30 minutes” — which ties directly to skip counting by 5s.
👩🏫 Teacher note
At half past, the hour hand sits between two numbers — the time is still the earlier hour (3:30, not 4:30). Point this out explicitly; it is the most common error.
🏠 Parent note
The short hand is the hour, the long hand is the minutes. When the long hand points to 6, it is half past (:30).
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reading the hour hand as the next hour when it is halfway
- Mixing up the hour and minute hands
