Add by place, one column at a time
Before regrouping, students need to be solid on the core move of column addition: add the ones, then add the tens, keeping each digit in its place. With ones that sum to 9 or less, there’s nothing to carry — so all the attention goes to lining numbers up and adding by place value.
How to use it
Have students add the ones column first, write that digit, then add the tens. Neat column alignment is the habit to build here; it’s what makes regrouping manageable next. When this feels easy, move on to 2-digit addition with regrouping.
👩🏫 Teacher note
This is the warm-up before regrouping. Keep the ones sums at 9 or less so students focus on aligning and adding by place, not carrying.
🏠 Parent note
Add the ones first, then the tens. Keep the columns lined up neatly.
Common Mistakes to Watch For

- Misaligning the tens and ones
