See the strategy behind mental addition
An open number line is a blank line with no marks — students draw their own jumps to add. To solve 34 + 20, start at 34 and make two jumps of ten to land on 54. Adding the tens first, then the ones, is exactly the mental-math strategy second graders are building; the line just makes the thinking visible. Jumps don’t have to be to scale.
How to use it
Have students label the start number, jump forward by tens (big jumps), then by ones (small jumps), and read where they land. Builds on 2-digit addition without regrouping and the place-value idea of adding tens.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Start at the first number, make big jumps of ten, then small jumps of one. The open number line shows the strategy behind mental addition; jumps don't need to be to scale.
🏠 Parent note
Start at the first number on the line. Jump forward by tens, then by ones, and read where you land.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Making uneven jumps that don't match the number
- Jumping the wrong amount of tens or ones
Answer Key
