Carrying is just trading ten ones for one ten
Regrouping looks like a rule — “write one, carry one” — but it’s really place value in action. When the ones column adds to 10 or more, ten of those ones become a single ten and move next door to the tens column. Students who understand the trade make far fewer mistakes than those who only memorize the steps.
How to use it
Have students add the ones first. If the total is 10 or more, write the ones digit underneath and carry the ten. Base-ten blocks (or the place-value worksheet) are a great warm-up — physically trading ten unit cubes for one rod makes the carry feel logical instead of magical.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Connect carrying to place value: ten ones become one ten, which moves to the tens column. Base-ten blocks make the 'trade' concrete before the algorithm.
🏠 Parent note
Add the ones first. If you get 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry the 1 to the tens column.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Forgetting to carry the ten into the tens column
- Writing a two-digit number in the ones place instead of regrouping
