Money math, in real situations
Money word problems blend two skills: finding the total value of a set of coins and making change. The first hurdle is remembering that a coin’s value isn’t one — a dime is ten cents — and the second is choosing to subtract when a problem asks how much change is left.
How to use it
Have students count coins by value (quarters by 25, dimes by 10, nickels by 5) for totals, and subtract for change. This builds on counting coins and making change.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Mix of total-value and making-change problems. Remind students to count by coin value (quarters 25, dimes 10, nickels 5) and to subtract for change.
🏠 Parent note
Count coins by their value, not as ones. For change, subtract the cost from the money paid.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Treating each coin as one cent
- Adding when the problem asks for change
Answer Key
