Coins are worth more than one cent each

The first hurdle in counting money is that a coin’s value isn’t the same as one. A dime is one coin but ten cents. Once students hold each coin’s value in mind, counting money becomes a skip-counting problem: count the quarters, then the dimes by ten, then the nickels by five, then the pennies.

How to use it

Always start with the largest coins. Count “25, 50” for quarters, keep going by tens for dimes, fives for nickels, and ones for pennies. This is exactly why skip counting is such useful practice — and counting by fives is the same skill used in telling time.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Teach students to count from the largest coin down: quarters, then dimes, then nickels, then pennies. Skip counting by 5s and 10s makes this fast.

🏠 Parent note

Start with the biggest coins. Count quarters (25, 50), then add dimes (by tens), nickels (by fives), and pennies last.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Counting each coin as one cent instead of its value
  • Not starting with the largest coins
