Stepping toward the times tables
Counting by 3s and 4s is the next rung after 2s, 5s, and 10s — and it’s secretly multiplication practice. Saying “4, 8, 12, 16” is rehearsing the 4 times table before it’s ever called that. These larger steps also strengthen mental addition.
How to use it
Have students find the step size from the first few numbers, then add it each time, saying the sequence out loud. The wobble usually comes right after crossing a ten (28 → 32). When 3s and 4s feel steady, students are well prepared for multiplication facts.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Counting by 3s and 4s previews the 3 and 4 times tables. Have students add the step amount each time and say the numbers aloud to hear the pattern.
🏠 Parent note
Find the jump (3 or 4) by looking at the first numbers, then keep adding that amount.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Adding the wrong step amount partway through
- Losing the pattern after crossing a ten
