Counting back to subtract

On an open number line, subtraction is counting back. To solve 54 − 20, start at 54 and make two jumps of ten to the left, landing on 34. Subtracting the tens first, then the ones, is the same mental strategy second graders use — the line just makes it visible. Jumps don’t have to be to scale.

How to use it

Have students start at the bigger number and jump back by tens, then ones. Watch for students who jump the wrong way. This mirrors addition on the open number line and supports subtraction with regrouping.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Subtraction on the open number line is counting back. Start at the bigger number and make jumps of ten to the left, then ones. The line shows the strategy; jumps need not be to scale.

🏠 Parent note

Start at the bigger number and jump backward — by tens first, then ones. Where you land is the answer.

Common Mistakes to Watch For
