Preview of Multiplication & Division Fact Families

Four facts, one family

A fact family is a set of related facts built from the same three numbers. The two smaller numbers are the factors and the largest is the product, so 3, 4, and 12 give two multiplication facts and two division facts. This shows that division undoes multiplication.

How to use it

Point out that the largest number is the product, then build all four facts. Pairs with division facts.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

The two smaller numbers are the factors; the largest is the product. Show how the same three numbers make 2 x and 2 division facts. This builds the inverse relationship.

🏠 Parent note

Point out that 3, 4, and 12 make a family: 3x4, 4x3, 12÷4, 12÷3.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Writing the dividend and divisor in the wrong order
  • Forgetting that the largest number is the product

Answer Key
