What This Worksheet Practices
Students will recall the 9 times table through 9 x 12 using the times-10-minus-one-group and digit-sum patterns.
- Recalling the 9 times table
- Using x10 minus one group (9 x 6 = 60 - 6)
- Checking with the digit-sum pattern

The 9s are full of patterns
The 9 times table looks hard but is loaded with shortcuts. The most useful: 9 x n = (10 x n) - n, so 9 x 7 is 70 minus 7, which is 63. And a built-in check: the digits of every 9s product add up to 9 (9 x 6 = 54, and 5 + 4 = 9). Few tables give students this much help.
How to use it
Teach the x10 minus one group strategy, then use the digit-sum as a quick check. This builds on the 10 times table. Part of the full times tables set.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Two patterns help: 9 x n = (10 x n) - n, and the digits of every 9s product add to 9 (9 x 6 = 54, and 5 + 4 = 9). Use the digit sum as a check.
🏠 Parent note
Multiply by 10, then subtract the number once. 9 x 7: 70 - 7 = 63.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Forgetting to subtract the group when using the x10 trick
- Confusing 9 x 6 (54) and 9 x 7 (63)
