Borrowing when there’s nothing to borrow
Subtracting across zeros is the hardest borrowing case: you can’t take from a zero, so you have to go to the next non-zero digit and regroup all the way down. The cleanest way to see 300 - 156 is to rename 300 as 2 hundreds, 9 tens, and 10 ones in one move, then subtract normally.
How to use it
When a column is 0, have students move left to the first non-zero digit, regroup, and work back across. The best self-check is adding back: the answer plus the number subtracted should equal the original. Builds on 3-digit subtraction with regrouping.
👩🏫 Teacher note
The trick: you can't borrow from a zero, so go to the next non-zero digit and regroup down the line. Modeling 300 as 2 hundreds, 9 tens, 10 ones makes it click.
🏠 Parent note
When the next column is 0, keep moving left until you reach a number you can borrow from. To check, add your answer to the number you subtracted.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Trying to borrow from a zero directly
- Forgetting to reduce a borrowed-from column
