The borrow, and the zero
Three-digit subtraction adds two challenges: borrowing across more than one column, and the hardest case of all — regrouping across a zero, as in 600 − 247. There are no tens to borrow from directly, so students regroup a hundred into tens first. Practicing this case deliberately prevents a very common error.
How to use it
Go right to left, borrowing whenever the top digit is too small. For numbers with a zero, model the double regroup. The best self-check is adding back: the answer plus the number subtracted should equal the original. Pairs with 3-digit addition.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Borrowing across a zero (as in 600 - 247) is the hardest case. Model regrouping a hundred into tens first. Students can check by adding the answer to the number subtracted.
🏠 Parent note
If the top digit is too small, borrow from the next column. To check, add your answer to the number you subtracted - you should get the top number.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger out of habit
- Regrouping incorrectly across a zero
