Counting time that has passed
Elapsed time asks how much time is between a start and an end. The reliable method is to count up: jump from the start to the next whole hour, then count whole hours, then the leftover minutes. The big thing to remember is that an hour is 60 minutes, not 100, so minutes wrap around at 60.
How to use it
Encourage counting up (a number line helps): from 7:30, jump 30 minutes to 8:00, then one hour to 9:00 — that’s 1 hour 30 minutes. Builds on telling time to 5 minutes and pairs with time to the nearest minute.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Count up: jump from the start time to the next hour, then by hours, then the extra minutes. A number line is a great support. Remember an hour is 60 minutes, not 100.
🏠 Parent note
Count forward from the start time: first to the next hour, then count whole hours, then the leftover minutes.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Treating an hour as 100 minutes instead of 60
- Forgetting to count the minutes after the whole hours
