Each number is five minutes
The leap from half-hour to five-minute reading is really a skip-counting skill: every number on the clock face stands for five minutes, not one. When the minute hand points to 3, that’s not “3 minutes” — it’s 5, 10, 15. Counting by fives around the face is the whole game.
How to use it
Read the hour first (which number did the short hand just pass?), then count the minute hand by fives. This is exactly where skip counting by 5s pays off. Watch for the common slip of pushing the hour forward too soon — at 6:50 the hour hand is nearly on 7, but the hour is still 6. Builds on time to the half hour.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Each number on the clock is five minutes, not one. Count by fives (5, 10, 15...) around the face. The hour is whichever number the short hand has just passed.
🏠 Parent note
Count the minute hand by fives: pointing at 3 means 15 minutes, at 9 means 45 minutes.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reading the minute hand as the number it points to (3) instead of the minutes (15)
- Advancing the hour too early when the minute hand is past 6
