A fraction added again and again
Multiplying a fraction by a whole number is just repeated addition: 3 × 1/4 means 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4. So you multiply the numerator by the whole number and keep the denominator the same. The most common error is multiplying the bottom number too — but the size of the piece never changes.
How to use it
Have students rewrite the problem as repeated addition first, then shortcut to multiplying the numerator. Answers greater than 1 (like 6/5) can be written as mixed numbers (1 1/5). Builds on fraction of a number and leads to multiplying fractions in 5th grade.

3 x 1/4 means 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4. Multiply only the numerator by the whole number; the denominator stays the same. Answers over 1 can be written as mixed numbers.
