Multiplying is taking a fraction of a fraction
Multiplying fractions is actually simpler than adding them — there’s no common denominator needed. Just multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. The meaning is “a fraction of a fraction”: 1/2 × 1/3 means “half of a third,” which is one sixth. That’s why multiplying two fractions less than one gives an even smaller result.
How to use it
Multiply straight across, then simplify (6/12 → 1/2). The most common confusion is dragging the common-denominator rule over from addition — remind students that’s only for adding and subtracting. Reading the problem aloud as “half of a third” keeps the meaning attached to the procedure. This follows adding unlike denominators.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Contrast with addition: multiplying needs NO common denominator. Read 1/2 × 1/3 as 'half of a third' to build meaning before the procedure.
🏠 Parent note
Multiply the top numbers together and the bottom numbers together. Then simplify if you can.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Trying to find a common denominator (that's for adding, not multiplying)
- Forgetting to simplify the answer
