Subtract the pieces, keep their size
Subtracting fractions with the same denominator works just like adding them: the denominator names the size of the piece and doesn’t change — you only subtract the numerators. So 5/6 − 2/6 = 3/6. The classic mistake is subtracting the bottoms too, which would change the size of the pieces.
How to use it
Say each problem in words (“five sixths minus two sixths”) so students hear that only the count of pieces changes. Point out answers that simplify (3/6 = 1/2). Pairs with adding fractions.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Same size pieces: 5/6 - 2/6 = 3/6. The denominator (the size of the piece) does not change. Note where answers simplify, like 3/6 = 1/2.
🏠 Parent note
Subtract only the top numbers. The bottom number stays the same.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Subtracting the denominators too
- Forgetting the denominator names the size of the piece
