You can only add equal-size pieces
Adding 1/2 + 1/4 directly is like adding apples and oranges — the pieces are different sizes. The fix is to rename both fractions with a common denominator so every piece is the same size, then add the numerators. Here 1/2 becomes 2/4, and 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.
How to use it
Lean hard on equivalent fractions (the grade-4 skill): find a common denominator, rewrite each fraction, then add. The most common error is adding straight across (1/2 + 1/4 = 2/6). Remind students the denominator names the size of the piece — it doesn’t get added. This leads into multiplying fractions.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Anchor on equivalent fractions: you can only add pieces of the same size, so rename both fractions to a common denominator before adding.
🏠 Parent note
You can't add halves and fourths until they're the same size. Rewrite 1/2 as 2/4, then add.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Adding numerators and denominators straight across
- Using a common denominator but forgetting to convert the numerators
