Rounding scales up
Rounding large numbers uses the very same rule as smaller ones: look at the digit just to the right of the place you’re rounding to. If it’s 5 or more, round up; everything to the right of the rounding place becomes zero. The only new part is naming the larger place (thousands, ten-thousands).
How to use it
State the target place first (“nearest thousand”), then check one digit to the right. Watch the halfway cases (47,500 → 48,000). Builds on rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 and place value to the hundred thousands.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Same rule as smaller numbers: look at the digit just to the right of the rounding place; 5 or more rounds up. Everything to the right becomes zero.
🏠 Parent note
Find the place you're rounding to, then look one digit to the right. 5 or more rounds up; the rest become zeros.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Looking at the wrong place to decide
- Changing digits to the left of the rounding place
