Rounding is finding the closest landmark

Rounding answers the question “what’s the nearest ten (or hundred)?” The reliable method is to look at the digit to the right of the place you’re rounding to: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 rounds down. A number line makes the idea concrete — 47 sits between 40 and 50, but it’s closer to 50.

How to use it

Name the place first (“we’re rounding to the nearest ten”), then look one digit to the right to decide. The tricky case is the halfway point (like 350 to the nearest hundred), where the rule says round up. Watch for students who look at the wrong digit. Rounding builds directly on place value and makes estimating sums and differences much faster.
