Reading bigger numbers by place
In fourth grade, place value extends into the thousands and hundred-thousands. The core idea stays the same: each place is worth ten times the place to its right, so the value of a digit is the digit times its place. Reading large numbers in groups of three (set off by commas) keeps the places organized.
How to use it
A place-value chart helps students line up the columns. For the value of a digit, name its place first (ten-thousands), then write the value (70,000). Builds on place value to the hundreds and supports rounding large numbers.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Each place is ten times the one to its right. A place-value chart helps students line up the ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, and hundred-thousands.
🏠 Parent note
Read large numbers in groups of three (separated by a comma). The value of a digit is the digit times its place.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Giving the digit instead of its value
- Miscounting place-value columns in large numbers
