Same rule, new places
Rounding decimals uses the exact rule students learned for whole numbers: look at the digit just to the right of the place you’re rounding to. To round to the nearest tenth, check the hundredths digit - 5 or more rounds the tenth up. The only new part is naming the decimal place you’re aiming for.
How to use it
State the target place first (“nearest tenth”), then look one digit to the right to decide. Watch the cases that round up across a 9 (4.95 to 5.0). Builds on rounding whole numbers and comparing decimals.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Same rule as whole numbers: look at the digit just to the right of the rounding place. 5 or more rounds up. Be explicit about which place is the target.
🏠 Parent note
To round to the nearest tenth, look at the hundredths digit: 5 or more rounds the tenth up.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Looking at the wrong place to decide
- Dropping needed places after rounding
