Two ways to write the same amount
A mixed number (3 1/2) and an improper fraction (7/2) name the same amount in different forms. Going from improper to mixed is a division: 7 / 2 = 3 with 1 left over, so 7/2 = 3 1/2. Going back, you multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator. The denominator never changes.
How to use it
For improper to mixed, divide the top by the bottom (quotient = whole, remainder = new numerator). For mixed to improper, multiply the whole by the bottom and add the top. Builds on equivalent fractions and supports adding fractions.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Improper to mixed: divide the numerator by the denominator; the quotient is the whole, the remainder is the new numerator. Mixed to improper: multiply the whole by the denominator and add the numerator.
🏠 Parent note
To change 7/2 to a mixed number, divide 7 by 2: 3 with 1 left over, so 3 1/2.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Forgetting to keep the same denominator
- Mixing up the numerator and denominator when converting back
