Counting with confidence

Counting to 10 is the bedrock of kindergarten math. This worksheet keeps numbers within 10 and mixes three closely related skills: continuing a count, filling a gap in a sequence, and naming the number that comes just before or after another. Working across all three helps children build a flexible sense of number order rather than only reciting from one.

How to use it

Keep counters, fingers, or a number line nearby. If a child hesitates, count the whole sequence aloud together and then return to the missing number. The “before/after” questions are often the trickiest, so model them with a number line where before means “to the left” and after means “to the right.”

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Pair with counters or a number line for students who are still building one-to-one counting.

🏠 Parent note

Count out loud together first, then fill in the missing numbers.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Skipping a number when counting up
  • Confusing 'before' and 'after'
