Seeing numbers, not just counting them
A ten-frame turns a number into a picture. Because the top row holds exactly five, children quickly learn to see six as “five and one more” instead of counting all the way from one. That mental image is the foundation for addition, subtraction, and place value later on.
How to use it
Watch for students who recount every dot from 1. Prompt them: “Is the top row full? Then start at five and count on.” The challenge problem flips the thinking — counting the empty cells — which quietly introduces the idea that 6 and 4 make 10.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Encourage students to notice when the top row is full (that's 5) and count on from there, rather than starting at 1 each time.
🏠 Parent note
If the top row is full, that's 5. Then count just the dots in the bottom row and add them on.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Recounting one by one instead of seeing a full row of 5
- Counting the empty cells instead of the filled ones
