Counting through the teens
Counting to 20 sounds like a small step after 10, but the teens are tricky: the number names stop being predictable (eleven, twelve) and writing them invites reversals like 41 for 14. This worksheet keeps every problem in the 11–20 range so students get focused practice exactly where counting tends to wobble.
How to use it
Lean on the number line at the top. Instead of counting from 1 every time, have students find a number they already know and take one step — right for the number after, left for the number before. Pair this page with counting to 10 for students who still need the smaller range.
👩🏫 Teacher note
The teens are where counting often breaks down. Point to the number line and count aloud from a nearby anchor number rather than from 1 each time.
🏠 Parent note
Use the number line at the top. Find a number you know, then move one step right for 'after' or one step left for 'before.'
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Skipping numbers in the teens (e.g., 13, 15)
- Reversing teen numbers when writing (e.g., writing 41 for 14)
