Counting you can touch
Before numbers mean anything on paper, young children need to count real things — one number name for each object, no skips and no repeats. This worksheet gives eight sets of simple shapes to count, staying within 10 so the focus is on careful counting rather than large quantities.
How to use it
Encourage your child to touch or cross out each shape as they say its number. The last number they say is the answer. If they rush and miscount, slow down and count the same group together — pointing to each shape — so they feel the one-to-one rhythm of counting.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Have students touch or cross out each object as they count it. This builds one-to-one correspondence and catches double-counting.
🏠 Parent note
Ask your child to point to each picture and count out loud, then write the number they landed on.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Counting an object twice or skipping one
- Losing track without touching each object
Answer Key
