Even or odd? Check the last digit
A number is even if it can be split into two equal groups - and the quick test is the ones digit: numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 are even; the rest are odd. The other digits don’t matter, which surprises a lot of students.
How to use it
Have students look only at the last digit. Connect “even” to pairs (every item has a partner) and “odd” to one left over. This links naturally to skip counting by 2s, which lands only on even numbers.
👩🏫 Teacher note
A number is even if its ones digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 - meaning it can be split into two equal groups (pairs). Only the ones digit matters.
🏠 Parent note
Look at the last digit only. If it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, it is even; otherwise it is odd.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Looking at the wrong digit
- Forgetting that 0 makes a number even
