Halves, thirds, and fourths

Before formal fractions, second graders learn to split shapes into equal parts and name them: two equal parts are halves, three are thirds, four are fourths (standard 2.G.3). The big idea is that the parts must be equal, and one of four equal parts is one fourth.

How to use it

Have students count the equal parts and name them, then write the unit fraction for one part (1/2, 1/3, 1/4). Point out that more parts means smaller pieces. This sets up naming fractions of a shape in third grade.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Second graders learn the words halves, thirds, and fourths (2.G.3) before formal fractions. Stress that the parts must be equal, and one of four equal parts is one fourth (1/4).

🏠 Parent note

Count the equal parts. Two equal parts are halves, three are thirds, four are fourths. One part out of four is 1/4.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Counting parts that are not equal
  • Calling 4 parts 'thirds'
