Build the 3s from skip counting
The 3 times table grows straight out of skip counting by 3s (3, 6, 9, 12…). When a fact is hard to recall, students can lean on the one before it and add another group of 3 — so 3 x 7 is 3 x 6 (18) plus 3, which is 21. This “add one more group” habit works for every table.
How to use it
Have students skip count to the answer or add 3 to the previous fact. Saying the table aloud builds the rhythm. The 3s also set up the 6 times table, which is just “double the 3s.” Part of the full times tables set.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Build the 3s from skip counting (3, 6, 9, 12...). For a tricky fact, add one more group of 3 to a known fact: 3 x 7 is 3 x 6 (18) plus 3.
🏠 Parent note
Count by 3s to find each answer, or add 3 to the fact before it.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Skipping a multiple when counting by 3s
