The 6s are double the 3s

The 6 times table is far less scary once students see that 6 x n is just double 3 x n. Since they already built the 3s from skip counting, the 6s come almost for free: 6 x 7 is 3 x 7 (21) doubled, which is 42. The middle facts (6 x 7, 6 x 8) are the most commonly missed, so they deserve extra reps.

How to use it

Have students multiply by 3, then double. This builds straight on the 3 times table. Drill 6 x 7 and 6 x 8 until they’re automatic. Part of the full times tables set.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

6 x n is double 3 x n: 6 x 7 is 3 x 7 (21) doubled, which is 42. Drill the middle facts (6 x 7, 6 x 8) since those are the most missed.

🏠 Parent note

Multiply by 3 first, then double it. 6 x 7: 3 x 7 = 21, doubled is 42.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Confusing 6 x 7 (42) and 6 x 8 (48)
  • Doubling the wrong 3s fact
