The trickiest table - made easier
The 7 times table is famous for being hard, mostly because it doesn’t have an obvious skip-counting rhythm and shares its toughest facts (7 x 7, 7 x 8) with no easier table. The fix is splitting: since 7 = 5 + 2, every 7s fact is a 5s fact plus a 2s fact. So 7 x 8 = 40 + 16 = 56.
How to use it
Teach the split into 5 + 2 strategy and give extra practice on 7 x 6, 7 x 7, and 7 x 8 - the most missed facts in all of multiplication. This builds on the 5 times table. Part of the full times tables set.
👩🏫 Teacher note
The 7s are the hardest table, so lean on splitting: 7 x 6 is (5 x 6) + (2 x 6) = 30 + 12 = 42. Give extra reps on 7 x 6, 7 x 7, and 7 x 8.
🏠 Parent note
Split 7 into 5 and 2: 7 x 8 is (5 x 8) + (2 x 8) = 40 + 16 = 56.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Confusing 7 x 6 (42), 7 x 7 (49), and 7 x 8 (56)
- Guessing instead of building from a known fact
