The 8s are double the 4s

The 8 times table caps off the doubling family: 8 x n is double 4 x n, which is double the 2s, which is double the number itself. So 8 x 7 is 4 x 7 (28) doubled to 56. Students who own their 2s and 4s already have the 8s within reach.

How to use it

Have students multiply by 4, then double - or double the number three times (7 to 14 to 28 to 56). This builds on the 4 times table. Drill 8 x 6 and 8 x 7. Part of the full times tables set.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

8 x n is double 4 x n: 8 x 7 is 4 x 7 (28) doubled, which is 56. Or double the number three times. Give extra reps on 8 x 6 and 8 x 7.

🏠 Parent note

Multiply by 4, then double. 8 x 7: 4 x 7 = 28, doubled is 56.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Losing track during repeated doubling
  • Confusing 8 x 6 (48) and 8 x 7 (56)
