Multiplying by a multiple of 10 is a basic fact in disguise. For 3 x 40, multiply 3 x 4 = 12, then attach one zero because you’re really multiplying by 4 tens: 120. Understanding it as place value (not just “add a zero”) makes it transfer to bigger numbers later.
How to use it
Have students solve the basic fact first, then attach one zero. Watch for the common slip of adding two zeros. This builds on the 10 times table and paves the way to 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication.
