From equal groups to multiplication
An array lines objects up in equal rows, which makes repeated addition easy to see: 3 rows of 4 is 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. This is the second-grade bridge to multiplication (standard 2.OA.4) — students learn that adding equal groups is the same as multiplying, long before they use the times sign.
How to use it
Have students add one row at a time, saying the group size each time. Counting the dots confirms the total. When arrays feel automatic, students are ready for 3rd grade multiplication arrays. This also builds on skip counting.
👩🏫 Teacher note
This is the 2nd grade bridge to multiplication (2.OA.4): an array of 3 rows of 4 is 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Have students add one row at a time.
🏠 Parent note
Count how many are in each row, then add that number once for each row.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Counting one row and forgetting to add the others
- Adding the wrong group size
