The whole is made of its parts
A number bond shows a whole split into two parts. The thinking is simple but powerful: the parts add up to the whole, and the whole minus one part gives the other. If a part is missing, you subtract; if the whole is missing, you add. This part-part-whole model is the backbone of mental math and fact families.
How to use it
Have students first ask, “Is the whole missing, or a part?” Whole missing → add the parts; part missing → subtract. Builds on missing addends and leads into fact families.
👩🏫 Teacher note
A number bond shows a whole made of two parts. If a part is missing, subtract; if the whole is missing, add the parts. This is the Singapore-math foundation for fact families and mental math.
🏠 Parent note
The big number is the whole; the two smaller numbers are the parts. Parts add to the whole, and the whole minus one part gives the other.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Adding the parts when the whole is what's missing... and vice versa
- Mixing up which number is the whole
