Adding the big numbers
Multi-digit addition is the same standard algorithm students learned with three-digit numbers — just with more columns and possibly several carries in a row. The make-or-break habit is lining up the digits by place value so the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands stay in their columns.
How to use it
Have students align by place value and add right to left, carrying as they go. Estimating first (round each number) catches big errors — 3,452 + 2,879 should be near 6,000. Builds on 3-digit addition.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Alignment is everything with large numbers. Have students estimate first (round each addend) to check that the answer is reasonable.
🏠 Parent note
Line up the digits by place value and add from the right, carrying when a column is 10 or more.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Misaligning place-value columns
- Forgetting to carry across several columns
