Factors fit in; multiples come out
Two ideas students often mix up: factors are the numbers that divide evenly into a number (the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12), while multiples are what you get by skip counting (the multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20…). A number has a limited list of factors but endless multiples.
How to use it
Find factors in pairs (1 and 12, 2 and 6, 3 and 4) so none are missed, and find multiples by skip counting. Keeping the two words straight is the main goal. This leads into prime and composite numbers.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Factors divide into a number (and come in pairs); multiples are what you get by skip counting. Finding factors in pairs (1 and the number, 2 and its partner...) prevents missing any.
🏠 Parent note
Factors fit into a number evenly; multiples are the times-table answers. Find factors in pairs so you don't miss one.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Confusing factors (that divide a number) with multiples (that the number divides)
- Missing a factor pair
